At the beginning of the month, a tragic accident left two men dead, including a well-respected Brooklyn rabbi. According to the New York Post, the rabbi and another man died in a wrong way car accident on the New York State Thruway.
The incident occurred around 1 am on a Tuesday. Reportedly, as the rabbi was driving his 2022 Nissan Altima in the southbound lanes of the New York State Thruway between exits 15A and 16, the other driver somehow entered the southbound lanes heading north while driving a 2017 Toyota Rav-4. According to police, the driver of the Toyota drove into the rabbi’s path, resulting in a collision. Reportedly, the Toyota burst into flames following the crash. Neither driver survived the wreck. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
At the time of this report, police were still investigating the incident and had yet to determine what led to the driver of the Toyota entering the southbound lanes of the New York State Thruway headed in the wrong direction.
Tips for Avoiding a Wrong Way Car Accident in New York
When drivers travel the wrong direction on a roadway, it often results in a head-on collision. Many drivers find it difficult to avoid wrong way car accidents because having another vehicle heading directly at you isn’t an everyday occurrence. Despite the out-of-the-ordinary nature of these types of wrecks, there are ways that drivers can avoid head-on car crashes. The following are tips for avoiding head-on collisions:
- Slow Down – This involves reducing your speed but not slamming on the brakes. The objective is to slow down and give yourself and the other driver more time to avoid crashing into one another. The reason you don’t want to stop is that it could result in a rear-end collision if there are vehicles behind you.
- Swerve Right – The reason you want to swerve right is because if the other driver realizes that they are driving in the wrong direction, their first instinct may be to try to swerve back into the correct lane, which would be to their right and your left. So, if you swerve left, you might end up increasing your chances of colliding with the other vehicle instead of lessening them.
- Get Off the Road – If slowing down and swerving right don’t work, try pulling off the road as safely as possible. If it’s safe, pull onto the shoulder if necessary. If there’s no shoulder, pull as far off the road as you can if it gives you an opportunity to avoid crashing head-on into the other vehicle.
