New York City is known as one of the most pedestrian-friendly and bike-friendly cities in the United States. The layout of the city allows for the majority of New Yorkers to avoid driving completely and opt for more eco-friendly options. However, some residents feel that city officials aren’t doing all they can to protect the safety of New York’s bicyclist population.
Following a string of fatal bicycle accidents in Brooklyn, activists are pressing local government to establish more bike lanes throughout the streets of New York City. Four of the fatal bike collisions that occurred in 2019 happened in Southern Brooklyn, according to a report from The Brooklyn Paper.
Bike South Brooklyn, which describes itself as “an advocacy group with the goal of making the streets of southern Brooklyn a comfortable and inviting place for anyone who wants to ride a bike,” is emphasizing the importance of bike lanes in the wake of these accidents. Transportation Alternatives is a similar group that “fights for changes on-the-ground in their neighborhoods, like bike lanes and new pedestrian plazas.” Both groups are expressing the need for a bike path network in Brooklyn and throughout New York City to local government officials.
Cyclists in areas without bike lanes are especially vulnerable to accidents. Bike-on-car collisions can contribute to severe injuries such as bone fractures, traumatic brain injuries, and paralysis, and are often fatal.
