Staying Safe on the Roads This Holiday Season

|

The holidays are widely cherished time of year, as many people will be returning home, visit other cities or states, or are hit with the strong urge to travel. Some of us travel to visit with family and friends we have not seen for a while. It is one of the busiest times of the year for long-distance traveling. People drive an estimate of 50 miles or more every holiday to visit family and friends.

The holidays usually bring joyful occasions, a and yet, sadly it is also one of the most dangerous times of the year to travel. The number of people on the road, including more reckless and negligent drivers (drunk drivers, as an example), and snowy or icy weather all contributes to making the roads much less safe.

Here are what are considered to be the most dangerous elements for holiday drivers:

  • Drunk drivers
  • Distracted driving
  • Driving under pressure (for example, drivers speeding to get to there destination, failing to stop completely at stop signs or red lights, failing to yield to others’ right of way)
  • Drowsy driving

The vast number of accidents that occur are alcohol-related. Alcohol impairs a driver’s perception, sense of judgment, and reaction time—all of the things that they must be conscious of when driving, particularly around the holidays when there is an increased risk of accident and subsequently, injury. It is not uncommon for a driver to be not only intoxicated while driving, but also performing other unsafe driving maneuvers or making poor driving decisions.
